At Steel Root Builders, we love building, and it’s not just the technical details and superior craftsmanship in home architecture that get us excited. We love building trust, inspiring soon-to-be homeowners, and executing on our clients’ visions with integrity and expertise.

The planning and details can make or break a new home build or renovation.  This is why we place emphasis on alignment and strong communication at the start of each project. When a client chooses us as their home building firm, we become a team. Before we officially begin our construction project, we’ll get to know you, learn about your vision, and make sure that we share similar values like collaboration, sustainability, and a commitment to quality. Are you looking for a well-designed, energy-efficient home? If so, we will be a great fit.

What to expect when you work with relationship-based home builders

Our approach to the construction process is collaborative. We’re eager to evaluate potential building sites and to consult with you on the pros and cons of the properties you’re considering. Bringing us on in the early development, pre-construction phase helps you to make the most informed decision possible. We’ll help solve problems and analyze on-site conditions that could lead to potential budget changes and possible risks.

Once a site is purchased and construction begins, we will use CoConstruct, an intuitive managment software program that serves as a digital hub to transmit information, convey the construction timeline, predict budgets, and schedule onsite and in-office meetings throughout the course of construction. Everyone from architects to interior designers will be invited to access your project’s CoConstruct page. If you need help sourcing important vendors, we’ll connect you with highly-vetted, capable partners who we’ve worked with in the past.

After construction is completed, we will schedule an in-person, detail-oriented walkthrough, to verify that your customizations are implemented correctly, and make sure that you understand how the electrical, plumbing, and HVAC functionalities of your new home work. We encourage you to ask questions at any point during construction!

Choosing a building partner requires a huge leap of faith

Steel Root Builders will build your home with care, attention, and mastery. The relationships we foster take precedence over the technicalities, but let’s face it: technicalities matter, too. Not too long ago, Steel Root Builders founder, Bob Koplos, remodeled his own home while living in it. He understands the messiness inherent to the building process. Amidst the scramble, brain fog, and complications, we want to ease your anxiety by helping you understand each step and learn some of the important structural techniques we implement.  The quality of your home is of the utmost importance to our team.

Here’s the nitty-gritty when it comes to material integrity, airtightness, and some of those other components you can't necessarily see, but that are vital to your health and the health of your new home.

Airtightness: We focus on achieving a HERS rating of 55 or lower. The HERS test, or Home Energy Rating System, is a nationally recognized system for inspecting and calculating a home’s energy performance.

In order to achieve the lowest HERS rating possible, we evaluate each project’s potential for achieving the lowest possible score before beginning construction. Airtightness and indoor air quality are paramount in new homes. We implement a Huber Zip System or fluid applied membrane on the outside of the sheathing that ensures a tight building envelope. We also implement a variety of advanced framing techniques and open or closed-cell foam insulation in the cavities of your home like crawl spaces, basements, and areas below slabs.

Material Integrity:  As a member of the Asheville Green Built Alliance, safety, sustainability, and home efficiencies are integral to our sourcing practices. Steel Root has a track record of building sustainably and sourcing recycled non-toxic, and environmentally friendly materials.

Are you ready to learn more about the people of Steel Root Builders and share your vision with us? We can’t wait to hear from you. Let’s build your dream home together.
