Black Mountain cross cabin

A Modern Mountainhome in Laurel Ridge

Custom Home Build

Asheville is a lovely place to escape… but we’ve known that for a while now. These Utah-based clients also discovered the allure of the Asheville area and commissioned our team for their modern vacation home in the Laurel Ridge Mountain Community. East of Asheville by about 30 minutes and only 15 minutes from Black Mountain, this stunning house is making a statement with its cross shape design, (thus, giving it its name.) Explore some of the design and build features below for a fuller understanding of this build.

Environmental Efficiency Features

  • Exterior Materials | The core construction of this home is a combination of poured concrete walls and traditional stick framing, for the exterior we opted for a thermally modified ash cladding. The thermal modification process provides a sustainable, chemical-free material that is treated only with heat and steam. The results is a low-impact, low maintenance product that fit the Scandinavian Modern design. We also used thermally modified Ash decking, making the exterior of this house our greenest yet.

Architectural Design Features

  • Interior Details | The Cabin Cross is not your typical cozy Asheville getaway. This home holds a main suite, 4 additional bedrooms, a chef’s kitchen, laundry, game room, and living room. With gorgeous year-round views, the deck and built-in 12 person hot tub are the perfect setting to relax.

  • Interior Finishes | One size does not fit all and neither does one finish, in this case. The interior of the Cabin Cross is a combination of tile, wood, exposed concrete, and drywall. To top off the interior details our crew prepped and burnt the interior wall cladding to echo the traditional Japanese shou sugi ban cladding. When it came to fixtures and paint colors, we were super lucky to work with Shelter Collective.
